Environmental policy is a mammoth task. It encompasses the efforts of ministries and other public institutions to conserve natural resources and the human environment and to use them responsibly. It draws on knowledge from a wide range of disciplines and brings together very different influences, ranging from concerns about health, nature and climate change, to social movements such as the anti-nuclear movement and climate activism, to international declarations of intent and agreements. However, the long-term perspective inherent in environmental protection is often sacrificed for the short-termism that characterizes market-based politics and economics. Accordingly, the individual pieces of the policy mosaic cannot form a coherent picture. Nevertheless, there are plenty of options for environmental action. However, these are not available free of charge. Environmental policy is only just beginning. Umweltpolitik ist eine Mammutaufgabe. Sie umfasst die Bemühungen von Ministerien und anderen öffentlichen Einrichtungen, die natürlichen Ressourcen und die menschliche Umwelt zu erhalten und schonend zu nutzen. Sie handelt auf der Grundlage von Erkenntnissen aus ganz unterschiedlichen Fachdisziplinen und bündelt unterschiedliche Einflüsse, die von der Sorge um die Entwicklung in den Bereichen Gesundheit, Natur und Klima über soziale Bewegungen wie die Anti-Atom-Bewegung und den Klima-Aktivismus bis hin zu internationalen Absichtserklärungen und Vereinbarungen reichen. Die dem Umweltschutz innewohnende langfristige Perspektive wird jedoch häufig der Kurzfristigkeit geopfert, die für eine auf Marktmechanismen basierende Vereinigung aus Politik und Wirtschaft charakteristisch ist. Dementsprechend können die einzelnen Mosaiksteine der Politik kein in sich stimmiges Bild ergeben. Nichtsdestotrotz gibt es praktisch für alle Umweltprobleme Handlungsoptionen. Zum Nulltarif sind diese allerdings nicht zu bekommen. Die Umweltpolitik steht erst am Anfang.
