Consciousness is still a mysterious phenomenon that can only be outlined in this chapter. The aim is to explain disturbances of consciousness. Can disturbances of consciousness be explained without knowing what consciousness is? How are we able to understand the psychopathological states that are, for example, referred to as somnolence or coma? It is certain today that we need to rethink consciousness: The theater-audience metaphor is misleading.
