At the smallest magnification, the circular field of view of the slit lamp, which is about 4 cm in diameter, usually covers an eye in its entire palpebral fissure width. If a monitor for video recording with an integrated camera is connected, this round field of view is reduced to a rectangular section of about 3×2 cm. This image section, which the classic application of the slit lamp provides, does capture the whole globe, but is not sufficient for documenting many oculoplastic findings. In addition, for aesthetic considerations, the direct comparison between right and left is often indispensable.
