For the examination of the macula, it may be advisable to use a circular aperture (e.g. 3.5 mm in diameter) instead of the slit. This corresponds more to the shape of the macula, and conclusions about dimensions on the fundus can be drawn more easily. The fine details of the morphology of the fovea can be more reliably identified with the +60 D (1.5 times larger at the same slit lamp setting) than with the +90 D lens. We less frequently use the +40 D fundus lens for this purpose (another 1.5 times magnification step). With the increasing prevalence of optical coherence tomography of the retina, the fundus examination at the slit lamp has found an ideal complement. Therefore, a significant goal of this chapter is to present comparative views between OCT and slit lamp images. In individual cases, it is possible to document macular changes over a period of 20 years.
