Many tribological phenomena in dry contacts that can be summarized under the very broad categories of “friction” and “wear”—e.g., energy dissipation and hysteresis, material removal and transport, or the change in surface topography due to the contact—only exist due to an interplay of normal and tangential external contact loading. In this chapter we deal with elastically decoupled, plane, frictional tangential contacts of homogeneous, isotropic elastic bodies. Starting from the general solution to the contact problem via its reduction to the frictionless normal contact using the Ciavarella–Jäger theorem, the contact solution for the simplest load history of a constant normal load and a subsequently applied, monotonically increasing tangential load is shown using several relevant, symmetric and asymmetric, as well as periodic contact profiles. After that, more complex loading histories and the influence of global bulk stresses within the contacting bodies are discussed.
