Soccer players constantly move during the match to occupy different regions of the pitch to generate opportunities for their team and to prevent offensive actions from the opponents. The dominant regionsDominant regions are defined as regions of the pitch where players can reach before the others. Over the last two decades, several models were developed to describe player-dominant regions allowing insights into pitch control, and invasion strategies. This chapter provides an overview of the development and interpretation of these models and the recent advances based on data-driven modelsData-driven models. The concepts, strengths, and limitations of traditional metrics are presented, such as the Voronoi DiagramVoronoi Diagram and models derived probabilistic inferences from players’ kinematic dataKinematic data. Finally, new perspectives and scientific challenges to the improvement of the models are presented.
