“Functional heart complaints” cover a wide spectrum of symptoms from palpitations or stumbling, stabbing, burning, or pulling in the heart region to the full picture of the “somatoform autonomic functional disorder of the cardiovascular system.” There is typically no sufficient organic cause, so the disorder has a complex psychosomatic cause. Without specific knowledge, the therapy is usually frustrating. An effective treatment relies on techniques of psychosomatic primary care, psychotherapy and in selected cases also on psychotropic medication.
