The so-called “non-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis” (NBTE) or noninfectious endocarditis refers to sterile vegetations on valves/implants. The most common etiology is carcinomas and lupus erythematosus. The distinction from infectious endocarditis is difficult. The underlying disease should be treated as therapy; anticoagulants are also used.
