Due to the patient’s often rather biomedical ideas about the causes of their somatic symptoms, the topic of “stress management” is a good place to start once sufficient motivation for therapy has been built up. Many patients experience the term “stress” as less threatening and stigmatizing. From everyday language, many patients are familiar with the topic of “stress”. An introductory psychoeducation about “stress” allows to enter the treatment on a biomedical level, which is usually closer to patients’ explanations for their symptoms. Because of the central importance of the experience of stress in the aetiopathogenesis of persistent somatic symptoms, the present manual dedicates two chapters to this topic. The first—more educational—chapter—comprises two sessions. The emphasis is on clarifying the functions of stress and educating the patient about the human stress response. The second chapter on stress and stress management rather focuses on cognitions associated with stress.

摘要
