Excursus: Communication in Everyday Life and with the Physician
摘要
Difficulties in communication in various areas of life represent an important problem for a subgroup of patients with persistent somatic symptoms. They can occur, among other things, in the relationship with relatives, with friends, with the (spouse) partner or with the doctor. These communication problems may be accompanied by the development of negative emotions such as frustration, anger or disappointment in the patient as well as in their environment, which in turn may contribute to the maintenance of the somatic and accompanying symptoms. It is scientifically proven that across disorders, 40% of the variance in treatment outcome is explained by extratherapeutic factors, including a patient’s social support and social network. Adequate social support is also associated with symptom severity and plays a mediator role between critical life events and the development of somatic symptoms. Therefore, it can be assumed that social support is a very important resource and a crucial protective factor for patients.
