The chapter is devoted to an event of lasting world-historical significance in all its translation-related facets and problems, which go hand in hand with external perception and descriptions from an outside perspective. The encounter between the Inca ruler Atahualpa and the Spanish conquistador Franzisco Pizarro in the Peruvian city of Cajamarca in 1532 can be considered a transcultural interaction and communication event sui generis. In contemporary and later accounts, it was subject to a range of different descriptions and interpretations in which translations played an important role. The chapter sheds light on the individual translation processes, dynamics, intentions, and competences in minute detail.
