In differential thermal analysis, DTA for short, a substance sample is continuously heated in presence of a reference material. The respective temperature of both materials is measured, whereby a temperature program calibrated for this purpose causes a linear increase in the temperature of the sample (TS). The aim of this measurement is to detect any changes that occur in the sample substance with increasing temperature; thus a ΔT/T curve is recorded. An example of a differential thermogram is shown in Fig. 31.7 from ► Skoog.
