This chapter examines the main developments in technological change and regime transition that have emerged in the post-war period. It is demonstrated that, despite the challenges in periodising technological change in the post-war era due to the variability in the pace of development across countries and the potential for marginal overlap between eras (Hall, 2020), it is nevertheless possible to identify three distinct eras of technological change. The chapter draws from seminal works in the CPE literature to present these three waves of technological change in the post-war era: the era of modernisation, from around 1950 to 1973; the era of liberalisation, from around 1980 to the 1990s; and the era of the knowledge economy, from about the 1990s to the present.
