This chapter shows how norm research has become established in International Relations and introduces a range of definitions of norms and norm dynamics, highlighting relevant aspects. It also discusses different types and effects, as well as the causal power of international norms, before situating norm research between rationalism and constructivism and distinguishing between four ideal-typical effect paths of norms. Finally, it reflects on approaches to norm research in terms of material and methods.

摘要

This chapter shows how norm research has become established in International Relations and introduces a range of definitions of norms and norm dynamics, highlighting relevant aspects. It also discusses different types and effects, as well as the causal power of international norms, before situating norm research between rationalism and constructivism and distinguishing between four ideal-typical effect paths of norms. Finally, it reflects on approaches to norm research in terms of material and methods.
