This introduction uses the example of the nuclear taboo as the deliberate non-use of nuclear weapons to introduce the subject of norm research and its explanatory potential for international politics. At the same time, initial definitions are offered, and fundamental effects and pathways of norms are discussed before norm research is situated within the discipline of International Relations. Finally, the didactic goal and structure of the entire textbook are presented.
