This article sheds light on the history of the creation and reception of the first rap song to be released on record in German, Ahmet Gündüz (1991) by the Ratingen hip-hop band Fresh Familee. On the one hand, the historical canonization of the song in the 1990s will be examined, including the media coverage of the Fresh Familee and their residential area Ratingen-West. On the other hand, the career of the song and its eponymous protagonist, Ahmet Gündüz, will also be traced up to the present day. The focus will be on current debates on sharing platforms such as YouTube. The central question of the canonization of the song is divided into two sub-questions. What role does the Ratingen-West district and its perception and representation play, both by the band itself and by the mass media? What role is played by Ahmet Gündüz, the character portrayed in the song, who has developed a complex life of his own?
