Network Society Theory: The Rise of the Network Society – by Manuel Castells (1996)
摘要
In this first volume of Manuel Castells’ trilogy on the Information Age, he presents a comprehensive techno-sociological analysis of global society. His core thesis is that key functions and processes in the Information Age are increasingly organized in the form of networks. Networks would form the new social morphology of our societies. And the spread of network logic would significantly change the functioning and outcomes of production, experience, power, and cultural processes. He sees the greatest change in the transformation of communication: The Internet has absorbed all other media, resulting in a multimodal system of digital communication. Castells’ theory was widely received internationally and predominantly positively commented. It is noteworthy that he popularized the term network and network research, even though he was not a network researcher himself.
