Structuration theory is a general social or societal theory, developed by the British sociologist Anthony Giddens in the early 1980s. At the heart of the theory is a comprehensive conceptualization of the interplay between individuals´ actions or interactions with institutions and structural conditions of those actions. Giddens’s main focus is on overcoming the dualism between structure and agency. This involves an understanding of structure and action as a duality, that is, as two distinct yet interdependent aspects of a whole. Although Giddens conceived structuration theory as a comprehensive sociological basic theory, it also provides comprehensive conceptual tools that are very useful for empirical research. Thus, numerous empirical and theoretical research contributions refer to structuration theory in different disciplines and research fields, such as communication studies, sociology, political science, and organizational and management research.

摘要
