In the first chapter, I explain the significance of chance and determinism for the biological/ecological worldview. I attempt to show that the two extreme positions regarding life on Earth (everything is chance or everything is determinism) would lead to a meaningless existence, and that (fortunately) both positions are scientifically untenable. The “truth” therefore lies somewhere in between.
