The following theoretical background describes relevant literature about mental health disorders and the treatment thereof as well as the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in mental health care, research focusing on the treatment of mental disorders using Virtual Reality (VR), virtual agents and lastly prevalent ethical guidelines and data safety laws regulating these new technologies.
