Preliminary fieldwork for this study began in October 2018 when I travelled to Bristol to visit and examine a range of cultural organisations, including Bristol Old Vic (Bristol Old Vic), Diverse Artist Network (DAN), Bristol Archives, M Shed and Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. At this stage, I anticipated studying institutions in relation to diversity practices, but the design was open, exploratory, and required an open and broad entry into the field (Whyte 1991). This provided an overview of a complex field with myriad social interactions and helped to develop open research and to adapt and respond to the field, for example when issues of accessibility and availability arose.
