Methodologically, we have constructed The Art of Requesting as an online questionnaire which suits our cross-cultural research focus because it can be easily distributed to a number of people from different parts of the world in a short time. We have decided to slightly modify the renowned and widely used discourse completion test (DCT), a data elicitation method which was first introduced by Blum-Kulka and requires respondents to fill in an incomplete discourse between two parties, wherein the middle part (the request) is left blank (1984: 198).
