Faculty and student mobility have been the golden standard for global and international engagement. Over the years, the limits of student mobility have become evident and there have been numerous calls for providing global learning experiences for all (Rubin and Guth, The guide to COIL Virtual Exchange, Stylus Publishing, Sterling, VA, 2022). The emergence of Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Virtual Exchange programs in the past three decades aligns with the need to bring the world to all students on our campuses. Various virtual exchanges have especially gained momentum over the past three years, leading to positive and transformative learning experiences. However, there is still much to be done at all levels of the education pipeline to ensure that every learner receives internationalized experience and builds their global workforce skills. By highlighting the innovative set-up, procedures, and administrative decisions that positively impact students’ global learning experiences, the chapter discusses Indiana University’s Global Classroom initiative. By providing the structure and support for pairing U.S. course instructors with university partners abroad, equitable student learning experiences are provided, and the study abroad experience is complemented through the working relationship with overseas studies. The chapter addresses insights from six cycles of the project as well as possible future directions for COIL Virtual Exchange programs.
