This section of the study focuses on theories and film analyses that elucidate the interrelations of text, textile, and texture within the context of cinematic storytelling. Following an introductory overview of the development of the concept of text in general, the film Die Nibelungen (Germany 1924, dir. Fritz Lang) is used to trace the transfer of text and the concept of text onto and into film. Particular attention is paid to the staging of the mythical narrative and how it becomes identity-forming through the plot, the mise en scène, and the depiction of the characters and their clothing. Building on this, the analysis turns to the portrayal of characters in three more recent films from 2010–2016. Starting from the narrative text of semantic clothing, the act of undressing here marks a turning away from the textile as well as from the significant text, which is penetrated in order to reveal the essential, the ‘true’ beneath. The focus is on the question of what cinematic-aesthetic changes occur through the act of undressing and how, in this way, the essence of the female protagonists is revealed.

This section of the study focuses on theories and film analyses that elucidate the interrelations of text, textile, and texture within the context of cinematic storytelling. Following an introductory overview of the development of the concept of text in general, the film Die Nibelungen (Germany 1924, dir.
