Final Considerations and Outlook
摘要
This chapter presents the theoretical synthesis of the book. It outlines the proposal to expand the direction of gaze with regard to the mode of appearance of architecture. Drawing on the theoretical foundations and based on the empirical study, a heuristic framework for the sociology of architecture is developed, showing how the sociological and corporeal-phenomenological relationship between humans and architecture can be conceptually grasped, classified, and programmatically considered. The proposal is as follows: to understand architecture in its duality as building structure and “Bauleib”. While the conceptual expression ‘architecture as building structure’ emphasizes the visible and tangible, and thus available, dimension of material culture, the aspectivity of architecture as “Bauleib” points to potential experiential dimensions within a spectrum spanning availability and unavailability. To conceive of architecture as “Bauleib” means to take into account modes of appearance and perception of built space that move within the realm of the fleeting, the atmospheric, and the semi-objective, addressing people in their feelings and corporeal states. The developed perspective can be seen as a proposal to see, build, and sense architecture with new eyes, and ideally to allow more conceptual (playful) space for a sustainable and ecological perspective on architecture.
