Although interdisciplinary debate on “trust” has a longer tradition, it is only in recent times that there has been a growing interest in trust-related topics within educational research. The following section will first outline and present this development in more detail, before focusing on the category of trust within the context of family theory. Given that the social form of the family is currently being questioned from a variety of perspectives regarding its significance, value, and design, the importance of trust in and for families will be examined along two key questions: What value does trust have for the family as a social unit in the eyes of individual actors and within the framework of individual attitudes, and what level of trust does the institution of the family enjoy from the perspective of different social fields?
