This chapter presents a brief historical review of export credit agencies (ECAs) since the emergence of the first publicly-supported ECA in the United Kingdom (the Export Credits Guarantee Department, or ECGD) in 1919. It throws light on the principal factors that influenced the emergence of ECAs, summarises recent developments in export credit administration, and looks at the impact that ECAs have had on both advanced economies and developing countries. ECAs emerged in the early 1900s as tools to create access to markets for the early industrialisers in Europe and North America.
