Part I provided the point of departure for this dissertation project. It emphasized the need to investigate citizens’ perceptions of electoral integrity in established democracies, outlined gaps in and contributions to existing research, situated the concept of electoral integrity within the broader context of political support, and provided a roadmap for the project. This second part of the thesis (Part II) now takes the first step on this road and aims to answer the first set of research questions: What does electoral integrity mean from a citizen’s perspective? Which dimensions can be identified? Without a clear understanding of what electoral integrity means, especially from a citizen’s perspective, the project cannot arrive at a suitable operationalization that allows it to assess citizens’ perceptions of electoral integrity in Germany and to empirically answer research questions related to these perceptions.
