Citizens are the central actors in democracy and their perceptions of the integrity of elections are essential for the legitimacy and stability of the democratic political system (see Part I). But what motivates citizens’ confidence in the integrity of electoral processes? Assessing which factors contribute to citizens’ perceptions of electoral integrity is not only important for the analysis of dynamics within electoral integrity beliefs and political support more broadly but also to better understand the interdependence between perceptions of electoral integrity and other psychological predispositions, political attitudes, and sociodemographic characteristics.
