The planning of mothers’ return to work and the division of childcare responsibilities with their partner sets the course for work engagement in the subsequent years. Based on interviews and a focus group discussion, this paper traces how, during this phase, traditional notions about the roles of mothers and fathers are reactivated and become guiding factors. This is despite the presence of emancipatory claims and a focus on employment. These findings are categorised and discussed using Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of habitus.
