This chapter applies the principles of social ethics developed by Walter Rauschenbusch and Martin Rade to the current economic situation in the United States and Germany. How does the relationship between the rich and the poor manifest in contemporary America and Germany? The discussion addresses the growing divide between the super-rich and those affected by poverty and social exclusion. The study then examines criticism of capitalism as articulated in Germany, the United States, and internationally, particularly by church representatives. Many critics of capitalism call for “alternatives” without specifying what these alternatives might look like. The chapter then describes two possible approaches to mitigating the most severe effects of a capitalist market economy and making it more socially just: the concept of “deep solidarity” and the so-called “real utopias.”
