Creating the “Casual Listener”: Consecrating Institutions and Spotify’s “Curational Turn”
摘要
In his studies on cultural production and consumption, Pierre Bourdieu emphasized the role of “consecrating institutions”. These are decisive for the symbolic hierarchies between cultural goods and are therefore also of great importance for questions of taste formation and distinction. In this article, I argue that an analysis of musical taste formation in the age of streaming must necessarily take platform designs and recommendation algorithms into account. However, these cannot be separated from the transformations of the (music) economy in recent years.
