We demonstrate, using the state of the sciences around the year 1900, the great division within the academic world. On one side, the successful, mathematical, and self-assured “enlightened” natural sciences; on the other side, “spiritual” questions that belong to another, at that time still unknown, world and whose chances of being answered appeared hopeless.
