This chapter engages with the basic questions, approaches and insights of sociological and other studies of technology, offering a systematic overview of the field’s development over the last decades. Main themes are the continuous mechanization and digitization of actions in everyday life, the dynamics and characteristics of sociotechnical change, the discussion of different approaches, and the demand of a more comprehensive concept of technology that is based on practices, processes and material agency. Such a non-dualist and social pragmatist program would have to answer the questions how particular forms of human, material and digital technization are created; how they are working and enacted; and how the interactivities between them are instituted and consolidated in sociotechnical constellations. The text is written in textbook style. Thus it invites all kinds of interested readers and researchers to be introduced to general findings of the field and the special approach developed in this book.
