Government Relations
摘要
Any commercial organization operates within a framework of laws and regulations set by local, regional, national, and in the case of EU member states, supranational bodies, the playing field where others put up the goal posts and can also move them. As this is a fact of life, and of course nobody questions the principle, corporations are well advised to interact proactively with the representatives of these institutions to secure an environment that does not spring surprises nor makes running a business unnecessarily difficult, let alone impossible. The first section of this chapter will show the wide range of Government Relations interlocutors, going beyond dealing with governments. We will then explain where the term “lobbying” comes from and why it is not the preferred term for this activity as we believe it should be conducted. Of the various groups of people relevant for Government Relations, we will take a closer look at the most important one, politicians and how they “tick.” In the next section, we will analyze an exemplary campaign conducted to avert a national piece of legislation, demonstrating how a concerted approach that combines elements of Media Relations and Government Relations is the most promising strategy. In the third section, we summarize the learning from that real-life experience and draft a general list of best practices. Finally, to complete the overview of Corporate Affairs professionals, we close with the job description for a Head of Government Relations.
