Working as the Brussels correspondent for a Hungarian daily newspaper, my main task is to cover Hungarian-related events and to investigate Hungarian-related news. I am not expected to function as a news agency, i.e. to report on all the decisions of the institutions and every event in Brussels. Apart from the Hungarian aspects, I naturally cover high-profile events such as summits, important policy proposals, decisions and parliamentary debates. I pay particular attention to the countries of Central and Eastern Europe in Brussels, as my paper also takes a regional approach. Hungary naturally compares itself with its neighbours. But there are so many “Hungarian issues” in Brussels that there is often not enough time to do anything other than cover them properly. Hungary has become a key player in European policymaking, even though the country’s size and location do not justify this at all.
