In this chapter, the basics of lightweight design in regard to materials and shape are further deepened. In particular, the different failure mechanisms of sandwich beams in relation to face sheets, core and interlayer are analyzed. In addition to the classic failure by reaching the yield stress or strength, global and local instabilities are considered.
