It seems that fewer societal barriers stand in the way of loving someone. We can now determine our own gender identity be it male, female, or non-binary — and our sexual orientation, as well as whom we choose to love. Whether we bestow our affection on a single person or love multiple people simultaneously, whether we formalise relationships or keep them open, whether we live together or maintain a long-distance relationship — the forms of love are boundless. With the changes initiated by the emancipation of women, a process of de-formalisation and de-normativisation has begun, gradually breaking down traditional societal constraints. This process opens up diverse relationship models, and allowings us to love people free from prescribed categories and norms, in order to fully enjoy the freedom of love. However, the transition from external control to self-determination brings with it new forms of unfreedom that can stand in the way of love. This very point — the relationship between love and freedom — representis one of the greatest challenges in the context of contemporary intimate relationships.
