Harry Triandis was a prominent interculturalist and co-founder of cross-cultural psychology. His research, which views culture as a collective system of meaning and significance, deals with cognitive aspects of social perception, attitudes, norms, roles, and values in different cultures. The focus is on the relationship between culture and psychological processes and their influence on behavior. Triandis was fascinated by the tension between universal (etic) and culture-specific (emic) psychological constructs. He referred to the prevailing North American dominance of intercultural research as intellectual colonialism. Triandis became known for his extensive work on the cultural dimensions of individualism and collectivism and the related concept of in-group and out-group. He contributed to conceptual developments, empirical investigations, methodological innovations, and the transfer of intercultural learning from theory to practice, most notably with the Culture Assimilator training concept.
