Steven Vertovec studies global migration and aims to raise awareness of the highly fragmented and multidimensional cultural and social diversity of migrant societies. Western migration studies are often locked into paradigms of multiculturalism, which assume that migrations are large-scale movements of a few large groups in a single direction. The multidimensional diversity that Vertovec instead tries to make visible—often with statistics—and which he calls super-diversity, requires new approaches to management and integration, especially from social policy. Vertovec argues for promoting this diversity, supporting it, and recognizing its strengths. This includes, for example, the phenomenon of circular migration, in which people move several times between their country of origin and their country of destination.
