Bernd Müller-Jacquier views the field of intercultural communication as being too dominated by psychological approaches, which primarily identify cultural differences in the norms and values of people. According to Müller-Jacquier, however, the language use of people is also extremely culture-specific. Such differences can be identified at every level of linguistic research. A direct identification of culture-specific values is therefore neither possible in research nor in everyday life, according to Müller-Jacquier, because the access to such value attitudes is always linguistically mediated. The level of communicative genres includes, for example, extensive contextual knowledge for the design of and dealing with action situations. Using the example of first contact situations, Müller-Jacquier also describes linguistic everyday strategies with which people can always achieve understanding in intercultural contact.
