Morality is considered a cornerstone of human society in sociology. Moral emotions such as shame, guilt, and moral anger serve as guardians of the moral order in direct interactions. In contrast, the other moral emotion moral outrage is used to address abstract moral constructs. This mixed emotion of moral anger and moral disgust likely emerged with the transition between communities and societies as a socially guided evolutionary response to the increasingly complex moral environment that knew more than just one form of morality.
