Digital communication plays an outstanding role in politics today. Be it individually in election campaigns, for example via social media, or institutionally in day-to-day business, for example with live streams from Landtag assemblies. Digitalization has long since arrived in politics and it is not uncommon for trends to develop early on in political digital communication that are later also used in the business sector. This study examines the Austrian state parliaments (Landtage) and their digital communication activities. Given the crucial role of the state parliaments as legislators and regulators, their online presence is essential for sustained public engagement. This leads to the following research question: “How do the Austrian state parliaments communicate in the digital space?”. The digital communication channels of the nine Austrian Landtage are analyzed according to usability and customer experience criteria. In addition, the study shows a development over time, as two waves of analysis were carried out at intervals of 17 months. The results show significant differences in the online activities of the state parliaments. Some federal states have developed advanced digital strategies, while others have hardly any online engagement. Some social media channels, especially Instagram, offer a higher level of digital interaction compared to other platforms such as Facebook and YouTube. Based on these findings, this study provides recommendations for the further development of the state parliaments’ digital communication strategies. These include increasing digital interactivity, updating information and ensuring a consistent online presence.

摘要
