In this article, we discuss to what extent nature experiences and contacts can be facilitated through citizen science approaches and demonstrate, using practical examples, the opportunities and limitations of citizen science in relation to nature experience and education. Starting from the citizen science approach, the spectrum of possible participation in nature-related science is shown. In relation to the concept of experience according to Dewey (1916/2011) and the dimensions of nature experiences, it becomes apparent that many environmental and nature-based citizen science projects enable nature experiences (e.g., collecting data in the field). However, the question of to what extent these nature immersions become nature experiences remains unresolved at the current state of research. With three projects in the environmental field, this article demonstrates how citizen science projects can facilitate nature immersions and nature experience and thus strengthen awareness of nature. Citizen science in the environmental field has the potential to combine the communication of science with nature experience in action-oriented projects for different age and interest groups. However, there needs to be a stronger exchange between educational research and citizen science practice, e.g., in project development, coordination, and evaluation.
