Plants form the basis of life on Earth, yet they are barely noticed, nor is their importance for the planet recognized (Plant Blindness). To protect plant diversity and thus secure the basis of life on our planet, scientists call for a greater focus on plants in the public eye. During extracurricular activities for students in the Botanical Gardens of the University of Bonn and its adjacent teaching and learning garden, opportunities to promote interest in plants were examined. It was found that allowing learners to engage with plants in a self-directed manner positively affects their interest. The implementation of scientific investigations and gardening activities, as well as engagement with plant diversity, e.g., through excursions to botanical gardens, can enhance learners’ interest in plants and their conscious perception.
