Values are a central theme in the history of social philosophy and social science. The first question to address, therefore, is the role that values have played in this intellectual historyintellectual history and how Weber’s approach compares to other views. Weber’s approach is particularly relevant because he was the first to explicitly highlight the importance of interests and values for social action. However, he provides little information about which values are relevant today and he postulates the questionable thesis that there are insoluble conflicts between different values. Suggestions for a sociological theory of values can also be found in Durkheim and contemporary sociologists such as Amitai Etzioni, Luc Boltanski, and Laurent Thévenot. However, the approach developed here is closest to critical theory (Habermas, Honnet). It postulates that values are worked out in public discussion processes, but also that moral outrage and societal unrest and conflicts related to them play an important role.
