Prosperity is considered here as the third of the basic social values. That there has been an immense progressProgress concerning the realizaiont of this value is beyond question. However, it is surprising that this value is mentioned by very few authors who have worked on the topic of basic social values. The reason could be that prosperity is often associated with immense wealth by critical authors, and linked to egoism and materialism by conservative authors. Prosperity is defined here as a life situation in which the basic needs of a person or a family can be met and this is also secured for the future. Thus, poverty (as a lack in both respects) and wealth (as an abundance of material means) can be clearly distinguished from prosperity. The important question of property for many people (such as in the form of apartment or home ownership) can also be viewed sociologically from such a perspective without ideology. Theses, such as the greed of the rich, can be empirically more accurately determined and delimited. Finally, a clear conclusion also emerges concerning the controversial goal of economic growth. This cannot be seen as a value in itself, but is highly significant when it comes to the eradication of poverty and a more even distribution of income and wealth around the world. If inclusive growth is pursued, negative impacts on the environment can also be kept at bay.
