The aim of this chapter is to describe the significance of conscription in Finnish society. The authors describe the background and purpose of the compulsory military service in Finland. Specifically, they focus on the meaning of conscription to the nation’s defense will and to society. The analysis is based on legal documents, official statistics, academic literature, and a quantative questionnaire.
