Research on ethnographic differences focuses on difference orders; however, over time, only more than one difference category is systematically pursued. For a further development of ethnographic, this article proposes a heuristic for the reconstruction of discursive practices of differentiations and normalisations. The heuristic can be applied to various types of ethnographic data—for example, interviews, field protocols, documents, ethnographic conversations—to answer the question of how differences are produced or updated in discursive practices—for example, invoking, attributing, and categorising. Further, the heuristic helps to understand which constructions of difference and normality are invoked, confirmed, forgotten or modified and put into effect. The question is how the reproduction and/or shift in meanings arise in discursive practices of differentiation. After a discussion on the state of ethnographic difference research in educational science, the heuristic is first theoretically substantiated and then its use is exemplarily illustrated using an interview excerpt. Overall, thediscursive practices of differentiation become evident as (permanent) work on the de/stabilization of the school order.

摘要
