The economy and its theories must increasingly deal with the pressing challenges of the future. This includes, above all, the ever-widening gap between the rich and the poor, between high and highest income earners and low-wage earners. Ethical questions and considerations in the economy are becoming increasingly urgent, as not only the financial crisis and the increasing willingness of market participants to speculate on the stock market have shown. The limits of growth must be taken into account as well as the negative consequences of economic activities on the environment. Globalization and especially digitization are dramatically changing the way we will work in the future. Many mostly simple and repetitive jobs are disappearing, while others, complex and demanding, are emerging. Economic science must change accordingly and address these issues. But what would be the goal of the future economy? What narrative does it offer? People worldwide should no longer go hungry, should have a roof over their heads and be able to “live decently”. At the end of this chapter, a “social utopia” and a look into an economy in uncertain times logically follow.
